From manuscripts presented to this Society[1]New England Historical and Genealogical Society by John Lewis Taylor, Esq., of Arlington, Mass.
The following items are from two pamphlets, the older of which is a small, thin book, without covers. The ink has been washed off in many places, but apparently all the pamphlet was copied into the second book, which is larger, and bears on the outside of the cover the following inscription:—“Amy Bullard 1816. A Record of Deaths from the year 1746 to the present time 1830.” Inside the cover is the name Thankful Bullard, and a loose paper containing a copy of the twenty-third Psalm is signed “’Thank’ Adams 1778.”
The Medway Vital Records give the marriage of Thankful Adams and Silas Bullard, Apr. 30, 1782. They settled in Medfield, and the records of that town, under date of Nov. 30, 1793, give the birth of Ama Bullard, daughter of Silas and Thankful. Therefore this record was handed on from mother to daughter; and it was evidently kept later by another member of the Bullard family, for an outside paper cover, put on for protection is marked “Elizabeth Bullard, Medfield, Mass.” [2]Moses Bullard, son of Silas and Thankful (Adams) Bullard married Elizabeth Taylo and had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1826, who died in 1908 unmarried. It would likely fall to her as the potential … Continue reading
The extreme dates touched by these records are 1746 to 1844. Only those entries which do not appear in the Medfield Vital Records and Medway Vital Records issued by this Society are here printed.
The references to “negro” in the following records are similar to the records of “Negro Woman Servant” etc. found in the official vital records. Slavery didn’t end in Massachusetts until 1780-1783 when a series of cases, most notably the Quock Walker cases—led the state’s highest court to rule that slavery was incompatible with the constitution. More research needs to be done to better understand the relationship between the blacks and the families that employed or owned them in Medfield.

| ↑2 | Moses Bullard, son of Silas and Thankful (Adams) Bullard married Elizabeth Taylo and had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1826, who died in 1908 unmarried. It would likely fall to her as the potential third author/owner as her mother Elizabeth was deceased before both Thankful and Amy. |
| ↑3 | This unnamed child is probably Gershom Adams, son of Ezekiel Adams and Lydia Lovell, born in Medfield on 27 Feb 1743/4. Another Gershom Adams birth, child of Ezekiel and Lydia, was recorded in Medfield Vital Records two years later and it has always been assumed that the first Gershom died young. This would appear to be that death record. |
| ↑4 | This is most likely Nathaniel Smith, son of Samuel Adams and Sarah (Clark) Bowers, born 31 Oct 1684; he married Lydia Partridge in 1717 as his second wife and removed from Medfield to Sturbridge in 1755. |
| ↑5 | There were several John Fisher’s residing in Medfield at this time. The family of John Fisher (1661-1755) and Sarah Adams, though, is probably the best match; he being known to have had a “negro man” named Pompey whom his 1734 will stated was to be sold upon administration and the proceeds divided amongst the heirs. It is mentioned that Pompey died before John Fisher did in 1755. I believe “Grovner” should be Coroner, a position John Fisher held in the community for a long period. |
| ↑6 | The date of this death is before the birth of Mary Clark who disappears from the record after her birth on 29 Jun 1746. A son, Benjamin, born 28 Aug 1743 in Medfield is presumed to have possibly moved to Marlboro by Tilden in his 1887 History of Medfield, but with this record now known, Benjamin Clark, Jr. is probably the child mentioned here, unless Benjamin, Sr. and his wife Mary had another unknown child born between Benjamin Jr. and Mary. |
| ↑7 | The published vital records are silent concerning Samuel Hooker’s death, but Tilden mentions it in his 1887 History of Medfield, p. 418. Sanuel Hooker (1725-1746) was the son of Henry Hooker and Elizabeth Hilliard. |
| ↑8 | Daniel Wight, son of Ephraim Wight and Lydia Morse was born 19 Nov 1680 and married Lydia Eastes in 1721. They raised four children in Medfield. Tilden states he died in 1744 and the Medfield Vital Records states “Daniel, h. Lydia, Sept 19, 174[4].” Both the 1850 and 1878 town version of the vital records state 1744 without question, so I’m not certain why the printed version showed doubt as to the year of death. Perhaps the family quibbled with the year? |
| ↑9 | John Cutler of Reading Massachusetts moved to Medfield in 1728, married Hannah Plimpton in 1730, and she bore him 10 children. History of Medfield records that three of those children died young; but there are no recorded deaths of any of John and Hannah’s children in Medfield: Nahum Cutler, born in 1733; Job Cutler born in 1743; and Elisha Cutler born in 1748, are all presumed by Tilden to have died the year they were born. It is also possible there was an unnamed child born in 1746 who died that year, or that one of the Bullock women recorded the death of a stillborn child. |
| ↑10 | Thomas Boyden is likely Thomas son of Jonathan Boyden and Mary Clark. |
| ↑11 | The Medfield Vital Records lists the death of Sarah Wight, wife of Seth Wight on 12 Oct 1746. It would appear then that she died giving birth to an unnamed child. This child is not in Tilden’s History of Medfield for the family. Sarah Pratt, who married Seth Wight 10 Mar 1740/1 in Medfield was the daughter of John Pratt and Mehitable Mason, born 18 Aug 1718 in Medfield. |
| ↑12 | The published Medfield Vital Records conflicts with the date presented here, stating that the death of Dea. George Barber occurred 17 Mar 1746/47. It would appear that the dates of Dea. George and his wife Anna’s death are reversed in one of the two different records, but which record is right? |
| ↑13 | The Medfield Vital Records conflicts with the date presented here, stating that the death of Dea. George Barber’s wife, Anna, occurred 15 Oct 1746. It would appear that the dates of Dea. George and his wife Anna’s death are reversed in one of the two different records, but which record is right? |
| ↑14 | The only Gerauld/Jerauld family residing in Medfield in 1748 were two doctors with the same name, Dr. James Jerauld and Susannah Greene, and Dr. James Gerauld and Martha Dupuis. This listing would imply that two sisters of one of the Dr. James died in 1748; or the worn part missing is completely corrupting the intent of the record. Safe to say that these two sisters cannot be identified in the existing records on the family. |
| ↑15 | Samuel Allen and Abigail Smith married in Medfield on 22 Apr 1747 and had Samuel Allen, born 17 Mar 1747/8. Wrentham Vital records states his death occurred on 12 Jun 1748. The couple had no other child in 1748. |
| ↑16 | Is this the John Draper who married Rachel Trowel about 1689 and had children in Boston? |
| ↑17 | This definitely refers to Dr. Jabez Fuller. Tilden’s History of Medfield however fails to identify any servant employed by Dr. Fuller. It’s possible that this individual is listed under their real name in the Medfield Vital Records. |

History of Medfield records that three of those children died young; but there are no recorded deaths of any of John and Hannah’s children in Medfield. Nahum Cutler, born in 1733; Job Cutler born in 1743; and Elisha Cutler born in 1748 are all presumed by Tilden to have died the year they were born. It is also possible there was an unnamed child born in 1750 who died that year, or that one of the Bullock women recorded the death of a stillborn child. |

| ↑20 | This death is recorded by Tilden in History of Medfield, p. 352 where he states that Benjamin Clark entered the army in the French war and died at Lake George in 1756. Benjamin was the son of Nathaniel Clark and Experience Hinsdale, married Mary _____ and had children born in Medfield. |
| ↑21 | There is a Jonathan Allan who married Sarah Ellis in Medfield in 1752. This may indicate a child born to that couple who then died, but caution should be had in making that absolute. Bullen is a common name in Medfield, and Ballou appears in Medway—while I cannot find a suitable Jonathan under either name in Medfield or Medway, I have not done an exhaustive search outside those two towns. There was a Jonathan Bullard in Medfield about this time as indicated in a previous record here, but you would think the Bullard woman would have spelled their own name correctly. |
| ↑22 | Prout is not a name known to Medfield or Medway. I suggest instead that this is either Grout or Pratt. |
| ↑23 | The only Nathan Clark that I am aware of is the Nathan Clark, son of David and Mary (Smith) Clark who died in Medfield 5 Mar 1777. He had a brother, David, who resided in Sheffield but I am unaware of any children named Nathan and the early vital records of Sheffield make no mention of a son Nathan to David. |
| ↑24 | Asaph Clark was the son of Daniel and Sarah Clark, born in Medfield 5 Feb 1745/6. |
| ↑25 | This is the recorded death of Daniel Clark, son of Nathaniel and Experience (Hinsdale) Clark and husband of Sarah Clark. |
| ↑26 | This Solomon is difficult to determine, and additional research needs to be done on the Clark family. |
| ↑27 | John Wight is likely the John, son of Jonathan Wight and Margaret Fairbanks, who married Mary Plimpton and resided in Medfield with his family at the time. |
| ↑28 | History of Medfield only records four children born to Nathan and Mary (Morse) Clark, and all of them lived beyond 1772. This date though is recorded for the wife of Nathan Clark, Mary, not a child. Did she die in childbirth? I find it difficult to comprehend that one of the Bullock ladies would record the death of the child but not the mother. |
| ↑29 | This is Jane (Phillips) Clark who married Solomon Clark in 1752. |
| ↑30 | Mary Plimpton, the wife of John Wight of Medfield is recorded in Medfield Vital Records as dying “Mary, wid. John, Nov. 1, 1782.” Is this record instead for Elizabeth Reed, wife of John Wight, who resided in Medfield up to 1770 when they were recorded in Monadnock No. 3 and then in 1772 to the church in Dublin, New Hampshire? |
| ↑31 | Sabra Partridge was the daughter of Johsua Partridge, Jr. and Hannah Cutler. She was born 5 Aug1873, baptized at the First Congregational Church in Millis on 10 Aug 1783. Her date of death is recorded in the 1904 John Partridge of Medfield, Mass., and His Descendants by George H. Partridge |
| ↑32 | Miriam Haven married Abel Partridge on 23 May 1765 in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Her death is recorded in History of Medfield as 1799, but both Medfield Vital Records and Medway Vital Records are silent on it. |
| ↑33 | Asa Wight, son of John Wight and Mary Plimpton, was born 30 Nov 1742 in Medfield. He married first Hannah Boyden, who died in 1791; second in 1793, Miriam Partridge, who died in 1816. History of Medfield has him dying in 1808. |
| ↑34 | There is no known child of Samuel and Catherine (Hartshorn) Johnson who would fit this infant. |
| ↑35 | The only William Clark who resided in Medfield at the time is William, son of Asa, who married Hannah Peters. That William is recorded as Capt. and died in 1825. His widow Hannah is recorded as having died in 1850. This record implies that William Clark was already dead and his widow died in 1820. |
| ↑36 | There is an Augusta and Mercy Clark residing in Boston and attending the Dorchester Street Methodist Episcopal Church in 1863. |
